Own the stage like a rockstar

It’s one thing to master the art of speaking fluently, which is truly an awesome soft skill to have. But it’s another thing to connect with the audience in a way that makes them want to listen to what you have to say. This is what we call stage presence.

Many people believe that stage presence is something you’re either born with or not. If it doesn’t come naturally, then your dreams of being a public speaker are doomed. However, this is not true. Stage presence is a skill that can be learned and improved over time and with practice. So don’t worry just yet! We have some expert tips and tricks to help you strengthen your stage presence.

  1. Dress Up Like an Award-Winning Public Speaker:
While your audience is there to listen to your speech, it’s important to acknowledge that humans are visual creatures. Our minds are driven by attractive images. So why not leverage this? Make a good first impression as soon as you step on that stage by looking well-dressed, well-groomed, and polished. Your appearance can greatly boost your confidence.
  2. Good Posture Makes a Big Difference:
Having good posture can significantly impact how your audience perceives you. When you step on stage, stand upright and firm. You don’t have to be tall to have good posture. Showing confidence, power, and presence can be achieved by having a strong connection to the ground.

Practice this: Stand in front of a mirror with both feet evenly balanced.

  1. Work on Your Pacing:
It’s okay to take a breath and slow down. We tend to speak fast when we’re nervous or too familiar with the material. However, speaking too quickly diminishes the impact of our message. One of the most powerful ways to effectively communicate with your audience is by using proper pacing. Give your audience enough time to follow you and process the information you’re providing.
  2. Leverage the Power of Eye Contact:
Speak to your audience as if you’re having a personal conversation with them. And what do you do during a one-on-one conversation? You maintain eye contact. This is a great way to build rapport and connect with your audience.

Hold each person’s gaze for about four seconds before gracefully shifting your focus to someone else. You’ll be surprised by the nods of agreement you’ll receive when you use this strategy.

  1. Be Confident:
Lastly, be confident. There’s nothing more alluring and convincing than a speaker who appears to truly know what they’re saying. If you speak well and have thoroughly prepared your presentation, there’s no reason not to be confident. However, be careful not to come across as arrogant. Pay attention to your choice of words and tone. You don’t want to be perceived as an annoying know-it-all.

Developing a strong stage presence is not as difficult as it seems. It’s all about your appearance, posture, gestures, and how you present yourself. Anyone, regardless of natural charm, can develop a strong stage presence with time and effort devoted to learning and practicing. Once you get everything right, you’ll be ready to own that stage as if it was built for you and only you!
